CE vs UL: Key Differences Explained
6 min read · Published 2024-01-05
CE and UL are often seen together on electronics, but they represent very different things.
CE marking is a European regulatory requirement. For many products, manufacturers can self-declare CE compliance — no independent testing required. CE covers the EU market.
UL Listed is a voluntary North American certification from UL Solutions. It always requires independent testing by UL. UL is not legally required by federal law, but is required by many electrical codes, insurance policies, and retailers.
Key differences: CE can be self-declared; UL cannot. CE is mandatory for EU market access; UL is voluntary but market-required. CE covers a broad range of requirements; UL focuses on safety testing.
