How to Read IP Ratings

7 min read · Published 2024-01-08

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating system is defined by IEC 60529. Every IP rating consists of two digits — the first indicates protection against solid particles, the second against liquids.

First digit (solids): 0 = no protection, 1 = objects >50mm, 2 = fingers, 3 = tools >2.5mm, 4 = wires >1mm, 5 = dust-protected, 6 = dust-tight.

Second digit (liquids): 0 = no protection, 1 = vertical dripping, 2 = 15° tilt, 3 = spraying, 4 = splashing, 5 = water jets, 6 = powerful jets, 7 = immersion 1m/30min, 8 = deeper immersion (manufacturer-defined), 9K = high-pressure hot water jets.

The IP68 caveat: IP68 means the manufacturer has tested the device at conditions they define — there's no standard depth or duration. Always check the manufacturer's specific IP68 conditions in the product documentation.
