Peace Symbol (CND Symbol)
International symbol of peace, originally designed for the British nuclear disarmament movement.
Description
The peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The design combines the semaphore signals for the letters N and D (Nuclear Disarmament) within a circle. Holtom later described the design as representing a human figure with arms outstretched downward in despair. The symbol was first used at the Aldermaston March in April 1958 and subsequently became a universal symbol of peace and anti-war movements worldwide.
